At-home guide
A good film night needs less planning than a party and more planning than pressing play. Pick a theme, set expectations, keep the runtime realistic and make the room comfortable.
The best themes are specific enough to make the night feel intentional but broad enough that people can enjoy the film without homework. Examples include one director, one decade, Irish debuts, comfort horror, courtroom dramas, road movies, music documentaries or films under 95 minutes.
A mixed group usually needs a lower barrier to entry than a film-club group. If people are arriving after work, avoid a three-hour film unless everyone asked for it. If the audience includes children, check classification and content warnings at source rather than relying on memory.
The common mistake is turning a film night into work. A short introduction is useful. A long lecture is not. Tell people why you chose the film, what to watch for, and when the break is. Then let the film do its job.
